I was just wondering whether you'd heard of Servas - it's a travelling organisation where you can stay in people's homes for a couple of days (sometimes longer) and you are encouraged to get to know your hosts through conversation. Many hosts are very interesting people and I've had the most incredible travel experiences through this organization. I've stayed on a Norwegian island with only 50 inhabitants, I've helped redecorate a Danish farmhouse, and was invited to pub music sessions in Scotland and Ireland I otherwise wouldn't have known about. As a host, we've had visitors from every continent, and some of them were the most fascinating people. If you're interested, I'd be happy to tell you more about it, just write me an email. If you don't know it already, that is. ;-) Another thing entirely: have you ever heard of Tristan da Cunha? It's an island in the middle of nowhere, west of Africa, population just under 300. They're all related to one another and don't allow new immigrants, only long-term visitors such as doctors or teachers, who might stay a couple of years, and a few tourists each year. I told them that although I do have some mental fears that will make my heart race, I trust myself to just go through them despite the fear.
